Approximately 100,000 items are available for use. A maximum of six items can be borrowed at one time. Unless otherwise stated, items can be borrowed free of charge. The two main lending periods are 14 days and 28 days.
New Book Shelves
All new books are shelved on the New Book Shelves for three months. This area is opposite the circulation desk on the ground floor. In an effort to circulate these books to as many of our customers as possible, most of these books have a lending period of 14 days and are not renewable.
The books are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System.
The reference collection includes books used for research that do not circulate. This includes Bermudiana and a hard copy of the Revised Laws of Bermuda. The reference collection includes a vertical file with newspaper clippings about hundreds of local subjects and people.
The library subscribes to all local papers and several foreign papers. These papers are available in the reading room on the first floor and cannot be borrowed. Local newspapers are kept on file in the repository on the first floor until they are microfilmed. Foreign papers are kept for one month.

The library subscribes to 40 magazines, both local and foreign. There is a collection of weekly and monthly magazines. Some circulate after they are no longer current, others remain in the reference section for two years. Current magazines are available on the first floor of the reading room. Circulation magazines for the past 12 months can be borrowed for up to two weeks.
The library has a collection of educational DVDs. These are free and can be checked out for a maximum of 7 days. They are not renewable. The overdue fine is $3.00 per day.
The library has music CDs in 20 different genres. These are free and can be checked out for a maximum of 7 days. They are not renewable. The overdue fine is $3.00 per day.
Talking Books are audio cassettes for special members. This membership is not limited to the visually impaired. It is for any adult that cannot cope with the conventional print. Talking books members can also use all Audio CDs and Audio Cassettes.
The library has a selection of learning tapes in various languages. A deposit equivalent to the cost of the tape is collected from the customer when they are checked out (a receipt is given). The money is returned when the material and the receipt is returned to the library.
Audio Book CDs
Audio book on CDs are available for all customers with library cards. They can be borrowed for up to 28 days.
A Playaway is similar to a MP3 player with an audio book already loaded on it. The playaway is all ready to go once checked out. All one has to do is to insert 1 AAA battery, headphones and listen. Here’s an example of what a Playaway looks like:
Audio Book Cassettes
Books on tape are available on the first floor for all adult members. These can be borrowed for a maximum of 28 days.
There are over 2,000 paperbacks on the ground level. These include Mystery, Suspense, Fantasy, SciFi, Romance, Black Fiction, General fiction and non-fiction.
Foreign Language Books
The library has a small collection of foreign language books in German, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

The staff at the information desk will answer ready reference questions (queries that can be answered in a 15 minute maximum time period) at 295-3104.
